Worked on this off and on for years, and now I’m not sure which came first, the coyote or the
duckling. Jean says the leaf, probably so. Found the coyote at Yosemite, and the duckling in a
pond at a neighborhood park. I’d carried the leaf home from a walk, liked the leathery look and
knew it would be used in the foreground. I especially enjoyed the coyote, the dark eyes allow
it to look anywhere.
There are three seasons and times of day incorporated in the scene, I see no reason they must
all match, it creates an unusual subtle dynamic.
Rocks can be complex, and to capture their variety takes time. Also took a long long time
working out the waters edge, technically it’s easy to do, but I wanted to really understand it.
Spent several years just casually looking at water edges, taking photo’s and sketching until I
got the feeling of understanding I wanted. It’s the feeling you get when after a lot of effort
the light finally turns on and you know that you’ve got it, although sometimes my light bulb
seems to be controlled by a dimmer switch.
